Playstation 4 Announcement

On February 20, 2013 Sony held a conference in New York where they unveiled their take on next-gen gaming, the Playstation 4. Can Sony live up to their name and deliver a true next-gen system? Read more after the break.

Sony made a bold move by announcing a console without even showing it, but that didn’t matter at the end of the show because their technology and game lineup blew everyone away.

Without getting too technical the PS4 boasts 8GB of GDDR5 RAM, now if you’re not a techy person ill put it into perspective, NVIDIA’s flagship $1000 Titan card has “just” 6GB GDDR5 memory, that’s insane! Sony opted to use modified off-the-shelf PC parts rather than making their own chips which will cut down development time and costs. The PS4 has an 8 core AMD “Jaguar” x86 64-bit CPU and an AMD GPU which can output 1.84 teraflops. There is a separate low power chip that handles downloading and uploading so you can now truly multitask unlike the PS3 which required you to exit the game to perform other tasks. The PS4 took a feature from its little brother the Vita, you can now put your games on standby and resume it from where you left off. There is also a new “share” feature where you can record your gameplay without sacrificing CPU cycles and directly upload it to your favorite social media sites right from the game!

Sony redesigned their controller (finally) changing its look for the first time since the Playstation 1. The controller has an LED light which is used for motion controls or can be used for games like for health info. Instead of the start and select buttons Sony shoehorned the rear touch panel of the vita into that tiny space, which might be used for menu navigation or QuickTime events in games.

No info on pricing and release dates have been released but it will be out by ‘Holiday 2013′. To sum it all up, the PS4 is a beast technically and Microsoft has to step up their game to keep up with it.
